What is fits?

The FITS file extension, short for Flexible Image Transport System is the data format used within astronomy for transporting, analyzing and archiving of scientific data files. It is much more than the more common JPG or GIF extensions in a way that it is developed to store scientific data  such as multidimensional arrays and two dimensional tables with information. The FITS extension can also be found under the FIZ extension.
