What is asf?

The ASF file format, short for Advanced Streaming Format, is an open file format by the Microsoft Corporation for the streaming of files that contain text, audio, video, animation and graphics. Since it doesn’t define what format is within the file, it rather is a standardized, extensible container that is not dependend on a specific operating system or protocol. It consists for three objects: a header, a data object and an optional index object that can help with the access to the data within the file. Because of it’s non-dependent form and the open file format, the ASF file is used by a number of programs such as Ashampoo Media Player, VideoFile, Cliprex Video, IrfanView, MMJB, SlowView, Ultraplayer and Winamp.
