The APNG file, short for Animated Portable Network Graphic, is an image file that contains multiple frames of PNG image files, which is used for an animation sequence (similar to animated GIF files). The difference is that the APNG file has support for 24-bit images and 8-bit transparency. Because the APNG file is saved as a normal PNG image (it also oftenly uses the PNG extenstion), APNG files are backwards compatible with a lot of software programs that support PNG files
