wav

WAV (or WAVE) is standard designed by Microsoft and IBM for storing audio files on computers. Its was created as a variant of the RIFF bitstreamtype so it has many similarities with the IFF and AIFF audio types which are used on Apple Macintosh computers. Although the WAV format is compressed with a codec it contains mostly PCM audio data so it remains an uncompressed format. This gives maximum quality but requires more disk space which is the reason MP3 became a much more popular fileformat.

WAV files are limited to 4 gigabytes in size which can hold more than 6 hours of audio in high quality.

MIME-TYPES: audio/wav, audio/x-wav, audio/wave, audio/x-pn-wav
