A RLE file format, short for Run-Length encoding, is a 4 or 8-bit RLE-encoded bitmap image, which is basically a DIB file that uses RLE compression. It is a common image format used in early versions of Windows and CompuServe software. The RLE image format is the native format used by the Utah Raster Toolkit, a collection of programs and C routines for managing raster images.
