The ASX file format, associated with ‘Advanced Stream Redirector file’ by Microsoft Corporation, is a file that points to an ASF file. Apparently, it is possible to put the Microsoft Advanced Streaming Format into an ASX file to enable the playback with later versions. There are a number of special MIME types that have been associated with ASX. These include: video/x-ms-asf-plugin (an embedding-only MIME type used to force a v7 scriptable interface), application/x-mplayer2 (an embedding-only MIME type used to force a v6 scriptable interface), and application/vnd.ms-asf (deprecated MIME type used briefly in 1996).
